This is an ongoing data collection of public sounds. Since 2022, I've been collecting short audio clips (approx. 1-min long) of moments in public when I am around people but their conversations aren't distinct.
Two interesting, unintended consequences of this work:
As I look back through the titles and moment, I've created an accidental diary of a sorts. I can see when in time I was helping my father in the hospital or taking my daughter to visit colleges. It's a record of my life through these moments which are otherwise ordinary.
I've found that having the audio and the title creates a really specific sense of memory. As the person who recorded them, going back through the audio triggers a full-body memory sensation. I find that I can recall details that I would have otherwise forgotten and feel physically positioned in the memory.
